love the earth

lately there have been some great newspaper and magazine articles about green living. GREEN LIVING. while we tend to focus our attention and energies on the earth during the month of april (earth day, see http://worldwildlife.org/earthday/), it seems to me that every day should be earth day. how do we do it? what does it mean? what does it prove? who will benefit? so many questions, but it is really quite an easy concept.

"And I have made the earth rich, and behold it is my footstool, wherefore, again I will stand upon it." - Doctrine and Covenants 38:17

in my mind we were given the opportunity to live on this fine planet. yes, our heavenly father gave us this earth for a limited time. each one of us has a rental agreement of sorts. for what we use never truly goes away -- it stays here for someone else to use or make sense of the mess. how do we show our gratitude to him? we love the earth. we cherish all that it is and all that it gives to us. we enjoy the beauty and the resource within. we take care of what we have so that we can share with others. we attempt to live simply so that our future prosperity will have something to enjoy.

hmmmm. so what can i do? in honor of valentine's week, i want to show my love for all things natural -- i want to be a better human and prove that i can make a difference on the earth. the little things that make a big difference with me include: use of cloth napkins and try to limit use of paper products that get thrown away; use newspaper to wash the windows (better than papertowels); turn down the heat in my home and put on warmer clothes (or snuggle with someone); reduce water usage by filling the sink 1/4 full for dish washing and refrain from letting the water run while brushing my teeth; turn off the lights in the rooms we are not using; allow "quiet" to frequent my mind which creates less noise pollution; buy less, buy less, buy less; eat the food in my home instead of wasting what i do not want; and spend as much time outside as possible-- looking, smelling, and enjoying what is right outside my door.
